What is the difference between mania and hypomania?

Hypomania involves elevated mood and energy, but mania can include risky behavior, psychosis, or hospitalization.

Both mania and hypomania involve elevated mood, increased energy, and activity, but mania is more extreme. Mania can cause significant problems at work, school, or in relationships, and may require hospitalization. Hypomania is milder, does not cause major functional impairment, and may even increase productivity or creativity.

Mania often includes symptoms like excessive risk-taking, rapid speech, irritability, and in severe cases, hallucinations or delusions. Hypomania involves similar symptoms but at a lower intensity and without psychotic features.
