How does autism affect social interaction?

Autism spectrum disorder often affects social communication and interaction. Individuals may have difficulty interpreting verbal and nonverbal cues, forming relationships, or responding appropriately in social contexts. Social challenges can range from mild to severe and are highly individualized. Early social skills training and supportive interventions can help improve outcomes.

Social rules don’t come naturally to me. I prefer clear communication and honesty.

Autism affects social interaction in different ways. Some people may avoid eye contact, have difficulty understanding body language, or find it challenging to maintain conversations. Others may prefer one-on-one interactions or social routines that feel predictable.

Children with autism may have trouble sharing interests, playing with peers, or responding to social cues. Patience, modeling social behavior, and structured guidance can help them build social skills over time.

Social interaction is challenging for me as an autistic adult. I often misread others’ expressions and take things literally, which can make conversations stressful. Loud or crowded environments can be overwhelming. With support and understanding from friends and family, I’ve learned strategies to communicate better, like asking for clarification or taking breaks when needed.
