How does autism affect emotional expression?

Autism can affect emotional expression because some individuals may find it harder to show or interpret emotions through facial expressions or tone of voice.

Autism can influence how individuals express and recognize emotions. Some people on the autism spectrum may have difficulty interpreting facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language, which are important parts of emotional communication.
In addition, expressing emotions in ways that others expect—such as smiling, making eye contact, or using certain gestures—may not always feel natural. This does not mean that autistic individuals lack emotions; many experience emotions deeply but may communicate them differently.

Eye contact and facial expressions may not always match emotions for some autistic individuals.
