Can amphetamine use worsen anxiety, depression, or PTSD?

Yes. Amphetamines can temporarily boost energy and mood, but over time they may increase anxiety, worsen depression, and trigger PTSD symptoms in some people.

Amphetamines stimulate the brain, which can temporarily make someone feel alert or euphoric. However, repeated use or high doses can increase anxiety, cause mood swings, and worsen depression. For people with PTSD, amphetamines may trigger flashbacks, agitation, or emotional instability. Using them without medical supervision is risky.

I’ve noticed that when people use amphetamines a lot, they sometimes feel really anxious or down after. For someone with PTSD, the drug can make stress reactions stronger and harder to manage.

Even if they help you feel awake or focused for a short time, amphetamines can make underlying mental health issues worse. Anxiety spikes, mood crashes, and stronger PTSD reactions are common, especially with misuse.

Some people feel more anxious or depressed after using amphetamines, and PTSD symptoms can feel stronger too. It’s not the same for everyone, but if you already struggle with mental health, these drugs can make things harder.
